Crispy Air Fryer Potato Slices
Air fryer potato slices are one of the easiest and tastiest snacks you can make at home. They turn golden and crispy on the outside while staying soft inside. Unlike deep frying, the air fryer uses very little oil, making the potatoes lighter but still full of flavor. These potato slices can be served as a snack, side dish, or quick appetizer with your favorite dipping sauce.
Ingredients
- 4 large potatoes
- 2–3 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon oregano or Italian seasoning
- Chili flakes (optional)
- Parmesan cheese (optional)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Choose the Right Potatoes
For crispy potato slices, use starchy potatoes like Russet potatoes because they become crispier in the air fryer. Yukon Gold potatoes also work well if you prefer a softer texture inside.
Wash the potatoes thoroughly to remove dirt. You can peel them or leave the skin on. Keeping the skin adds extra texture and flavor.
Step 2: Slice the Potatoes Evenly
Slice the potatoes into thin rounds, around ¼ inch thick. Try to keep all slices the same thickness so they cook evenly. Thick slices stay softer, while thinner slices become crispier.
A sharp knife works fine, but a mandoline slicer makes uniform slices more easily.
Step 3: Soak the Potatoes
Place the sliced potatoes in a bowl of cold water for 20–30 minutes. This step removes extra starch from the potatoes, which helps them become crispier during cooking.
If skipped, the potatoes may turn soft instead of crispy.
Step 4: Dry the Potatoes Properly
Drain the water and dry the slices very well with paper towels or a clean kitchen towel. Moisture prevents crispiness, so this step is very important.
The drier the potatoes are, the crispier they will become in the air fryer.
Step 5: Season the Potato Slices
Transfer the potato slices to a large bowl. Add olive oil and all the seasonings.
Mix gently with your hands or a spoon until every slice is coated evenly. The oil helps the seasoning stick while also helping the potatoes turn golden brown.
You can customize flavors by adding:
- Cajun seasoning for spice
- Parmesan for cheesiness
- Smoked paprika for smoky flavor
- Herbs for extra aroma
Step 6: Preheat the Air Fryer
Preheat the air fryer to 190°C (375°F) for 3–5 minutes. Preheating helps the potato slices start cooking immediately and improves crispiness.
Step 7: Arrange the Potatoes Correctly
Place the slices in a single layer inside the basket. Avoid stacking or overcrowding because air needs space to circulate around the potatoes.
If the basket is overcrowded, the slices may steam instead of crisp.
Cook in batches if necessary.
Step 8: Air Fry Until Crispy
Cook the potato slices for 15–18 minutes. Halfway through cooking, flip the slices or shake the basket so both sides cook evenly.
Cooking time may vary slightly depending on:
- Thickness of slices
- Type of potato
- Air fryer model
The potatoes are ready when they are golden brown with crispy edges.
Step 9: Final Crisping
For extra crunch, cook for another 2–3 minutes at the end. Watch carefully during this stage because thin slices can brown quickly.
Step 10: Serve Immediately
Serve the potato slices hot because they are crispiest right after cooking.
They pair perfectly with:
- Garlic mayo
- Cheese dip
- Ketchup
- Ranch sauce
- Spicy mayo
These potato slices also work well alongside burgers, sandwiches, grilled chicken, or BBQ meals.
Helpful Tips
- Always dry the potatoes completely.
- Do not overcrowd the basket.
- Flip halfway for even crispiness.
- Add seasoning after cooking if you prefer stronger flavor.
- Reheat leftovers in the air fryer for 2–3 minutes to make them crispy again.
