After you make this bold Chex mix on the griddle, you’ll probably never make it in the oven again! The classic savory Chex mix recipe done with a few twists, like buffalo sauce and Nashville Hot Rub!
PREPARATION TIME:
PREP TIME 10
COOK TIME 30
Ingredients:
- 3 sticks unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 cup buffalo sauce
- 12 oz box Rice Chex
- 14 oz box Wheat Chex
- 8.9 oz box Cheerios
- 12 oz box Kix cereal
- 12.4 oz box Cheez-Its snack crackers
- 16 oz bag pretzel sticks
- 2 cups mixed nuts (optional)
- 14.5 oz bag Bugles chips
- ½ cup granulated garlic
- ¼ cup seasoned salt (like Lawry’s seasoned salt)
- 1/4 cup Pit Boss Nashville Hot seasoning
Instructions:
-
Preheat griddle on low.
-
Combine granulated garlic, seasoned salt, and Nashville Hot rub in a medium bowl. Mix well and set to the side.
-
In a small saucepan, melt the unsalted butter. Add the Worcestershire sauce and buffalo sauce to the melted butter. Stir to combine.
-
Mix together all cereal, dry snacks, and nuts. I find it easiest to add all dry ingredients to a large, scent-free trash bag, but you can also use large mixing bowls.
-
Add roughly one cup of the melted butter mixture at a time to the dry cereal snack mixture (in the trash bag or mixing bowls). After adding each cup of liquid, toss the cereal mixture to coat it with the butter liquid. Continue adding the wet ingredients and mixing with the snack mixture until done. When mixing, be careful not to crush the cereal pieces.
-
When all of the wet ingredients are mixed in, lightly sprinkle in the seasoning mixture, about a small handful at a time. Toss the cereal snack mixture in between adding the seasoning mixture so that the cereal gets evenly seasoned, just like you did with the wet ingredients. Leave approximately 1/2 to 3/4 cup of seasoning for later, so you can adjust it to your liking.
-
Add the Chex mix to the preheated griddle surface in an even, somewhat thin layer. Sprinkle on the leftover seasoning, if you wish. You can also taste the Chex mix to test for seasonings at this time. Add more melted butter and Worcestershire or more seasoning to your liking.
-
Use your spatulas to gently and frequently stir the Chex mix on the griddle. You don’t want the snack mix to sit untouched on the griddle surface for too long, because it will burn.
-
Continue to toast the Chex mix on the griddle until it’s dried out, crispy, and done to your liking. You may need to turn one or more griddle burners off to help keep the temperature low. (My Chex mix took about 25 minutes to toast.)
-
When Chex mix is done, remove it from the griddle and allow it to cool before serving or transferring to food storage bags.
Notes:
- This bold Chex mix recipe can be customized to your liking. Add or substitute other dry cereal or snacks like Corn Chex, bagel chips, Life cereal, etc.
- I did not use all of the dry seasoning mixture. Adjust the seasonings to your liking.
- You can substitute about half to one tablespoon of cayenne pepper or other spicy seasoning for the Nashville Hot seasoning.
